Dear All,
I am writing this e-mail on the issue of the association between the Portuguese Red Cross (PRC) and bullfighting.
Unfortunately, in Portugal bullfighting is still a common practice. In each of these sad events about six or seven bulls are humiliated and tortured almost to death (and often horses perish as well). Spears with barbs are thrusted forcefully into their backs, causing severe bleeding and internal damage. A very high level of physical and psychological pain is caused to the bulls. Hours later these innocent animals are then butchered, after a long period of painful agony.
Although it is still legal in some countries, bullfighting has become the target of huge and growing social protests. For ethical reasons, more and more organizations choose to distance themselves as much as possible from this cruel activity.
It is quite difficult to understand how a prestigious institution such as the Red Cross can be associated to such cruel activities practiced upon the animals. As a matter of fact, aside from the regular provision of ambulances and human means to eventually assist people actively involved in bullfighting, there are some branches of the Portuguese Red Cross who advertise, sell tickets for and/or accept money from the bullfighting events – red blood-stained money from innocent animals. Presently a bullfight is being advertised for 19th August in support of the Safara and Sobral da Adiça branch of the Red Cross. (https://www.facebook.com/1654651968081940/photos/a.1656277011252769.1073741828.1654651968081940/1909836992563435/?type=3&theater).
The Portuguese Red Cross admits there are branches that receive money from bullfights but states they are not the organizers, and thus undervalues the regular protests, from members and sympathizers, it receives.
In face of what has been said I would like to appeal to the Red Cross to dissociate itself as much as possible from performances based on animal abuse, namely by not allowing its denomination/logo to be used in bullfighting posters; by not advertising bullfights; and by not accepting blood-tainted money from bullfights.
Thanking you in advance for the kind attention devoted to this letter, I look forward to your kind reply, which I hope will be a positive one.
Best regards,

Exmos./as. Srs./Sras.,
